Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on all members of parliament to work together regardless of differences and disagreements to save the current parliament from becoming “ineffective” and ensure the country's progress and a better future.
The Leader of the House made the call at the closing ceremony of the first session of the 13th parliament on Thursday night, saying the new parliament started its journey with a debt of Tk 3 trillion.
“We’ll not be able to take the country forward (unless) we have a stable government; if we cannot ensure a stable parliament, we will not be able to take this country forward in any way,” he said.
The premier emphasised: “The parliament cannot be allowed to fail."
Insisting on unity, he said: "If this country is to be taken forward, we both must work together.
"While there may be differences in how the IT industry should grow, there is unanimous support for its essential role in Bangladesh."
After the BNP government assumed office, the opening session of the 13th parliament was convened on Mar 12.
Speaking as the Leader of the House, Tarique said despite gaining independence in 1971, Bangladesh lags behind in development and other standards compared to countries liberated in 1972 or the following year.
“Why couldn’t we? Because as I said a little while ago, democracy has been hindered in this country in various ways,” he said.
Addressing the Opposition leader, the prime minister warned of hindrances to the economy, education and health sectors if democracy is affected.
“Through you, I want to appeal to my opposition colleagues: let us debate, we will debate, talk, discuss and meet, but this parliament cannot be allowed to fail in any way.”
