Train services on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route will remain suspended until weather conditions improve and floodwaters recede from the railway tracks, State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid has said.
He made the announcement on Wednesday after inspecting a flooded section of the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar railway line at Shamsher Para in Sholoshahar.
He was accompanied by Chattogram City Mayor Shahadat Hossain, Divisional Commissioner Md Ziauddin, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Islam Miah and Bangladesh Railway East Zone General Manager Md Subaktagin.
The minister and other officials travelled to the submerged section on a railway gang car along the flooded tracks at around 10am.
Speaking to reporters after returning to Chattogram Railway Station, he said train operations on the route would remain suspended for the time being.
Passengers who purchased tickets in Dhaka or Chattogram for travel to Cox's Bazar will receive refunds, he said.
"The prime minister instructed us to come here. Chattogram has been experiencing heavy rainfall, and waterlogging has affected railway operations.
“Train services between Chattogram and Cox's Bazar have already been disrupted, with several schedules affected," Habibur said.
"We inspected the main affected area at Shamsher Para beyond Sholoshahar and found water levels ranging from two to three feet in some places. Running trains through those sections could lead to a major accident."
"To avoid such a disaster, we have decided to suspend Chattogram-Cox's Bazar train services until the rainfall subsides and water drains off the railway tracks."
Chattogram recorded 412mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to Tuesday, the highest in 42 years, leaving large parts of the port city under water.
Amid the heavy rain, the Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox's Bazar-bound Parjatak Express became stranded after floodwater submerged the railway track near Sunnia Madrasa in Sholoshahar. A fallen tree also blocked the line.
The train was taken back to Sholoshahar Station at around 4pm on Tuesday and later returned to Chattogram Station at 9pm.
After passengers endured hours of disruption, the service was cancelled at 11pm.
Meanwhile, the Cox's Bazar Express, which left Dhaka on Tuesday night, reached Chattogram early on Wednesday.
However, it could not continue to Cox's Bazar because the flooded section of track remained under water. Its onward journey was also cancelled.
Passengers from both trains were forced to make their own arrangements to reach their destinations from Chattogram.
