The Bandarban district administration has extended the closure of all tourist destinations by two more days until Jul 12 as persistent heavy rain continues to create hazardous conditions across the hill district.
The decision was announced in a public notice signed by Deputy Commissioner Md Saniul Ferdous on Wednesday.
The notice said continuous heavy rainfall has increased the risk to transport networks in different parts of Bandarban.
Considering the prevailing weather conditions and potential dangers, the administration extended an earlier emergency order issued on Jul 6 to ensure the safety of tourists and the public.
Under the directive, all tourist attractions, waterfalls, hill trails, waterways, remote areas and other high-risk locations in Bandarban will remain closed to tourists, tour operators and the general public until Jul 12.
The district administration had earlier suspended access to all tourist destinations from Jul 6 to Jul 10.
The latest extension follows a further deterioration in weather conditions.
Intermittent rain continued across Bandarban for a third consecutive day on Wednesday.
Although conditions remained dry early in the morning, light rain resumed after 10am.
Because of the prolonged rainfall, the weekly Marma market at Madhyam Para in the district town did not open, with few buyers or sellers seen throughout the day.
No reports of major landslides from areas outside the district town had been received by Wednesday evening.
Road communication between Bandarban and Dhaka, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati and the Upazilas remained normal.
However, vehicle movement on the Rowangchhari road has remained suspended after a Bailey bridge at Kalaghatta near the district town went underwater.
Motorcycles have continued to use the route despite the risks.
Bandarban Weather Observation Centre official Sanatan Kumar Mondal said 210 millimetres of rainfall had been recorded in the 24 hours until 6pm on Wednesday.
He said active monsoon conditions could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours to parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
The Meteorological Department also warned that heavy rainfall could cause temporary waterlogging in parts of Chattogram city and trigger landslides in hilly areas of the Chattogram division.
Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer for Bandarban Apu Dev said the danger levels are 11.80 metres for the Matamuhuri River and 14.80m for the Sangu River.
By Wednesday evening, the Matamuhuri was flowing at 11.98m and the Sangu at 16.06m, both above their respective danger levels.
