Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has instructed the National Cyber Security Agency to intensify efforts to counter all forms of cybercrime ahead of the February elections.
Yunus gave the order on Sunday at a meeting of the National Cyber Security Council, according to the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO).
“We must strengthen our technological capacity for the next election and confront all forms of cybercrime decisively,” Yunus said.
“As the government brings more citizen services online, both domestically and internationally, ensuring their security and smooth operation is essential.”
He instructed officials to prioritise sectors providing citizen services.
“Agencies, including the National Cyber Security Agency, must regularly update software and hardware and enhance the skills of associated personnel,” Yunus said.
“Institutions and staff should also be evaluated under a rating system for an accurate assessment of cybersecurity readiness.”
On financial sector protection, he added: “No one should escape accountability for cyber crimes, and the agency must act effectively alongside the judiciary.”
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief advisor for posts, telecommunications and IT, said: “35 institutions have already been listed as critical information infrastructure,” and proposed including more bodies in the list.
He stressed coordination between the agency and BTRC to prevent rumours, misinformation, and other cyber offences ahead of the parliamentary polls.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur said, “Measures to strengthen cybersecurity in the banking sector are under way, and initiatives to establish sectoral CERTs are commendable.”
The 25-member council was formed on Aug 26 under the amended Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, promulgated on May 21, to ensure cybersecurity for state institutions and citizens.
