Information and Broadcasting Advisor Mahfuj Alam believes people are turning to alternative sources for information due to a lack of trust in mainstream media.
He also believes those who participated in "fascist activities" in the media in the past must be held accountable.
The advisor made these remarks on Sunday at a discussion on the media's role during the upcoming election at Dhaka's Tathya Bhaban.
The meeting was attended by media owners, editors, and top newsroom officials.
"Look at how severe the trust crisis is. Fake accounts and pages are being created using the logos of mainstream media outlets,” he said.
Highlighting that a culture of apology and remorse is necessary for Bangladesh's stability, the advisor said: "This practice does not exist in our society. That is why there is still a possibility of violence and bloodshed.
"Trust must be restored and action must be taken against identified individuals who worked for ‘fascism’. I am not in favour of personally suing or arresting anyone who hasn't committed a crime. But a moral reckoning is essential for them."
He emphasised that the media must be more accountable to its readers. "Journalists are more accountable to the public because they are their judges. When the trust crisis is overcome, mob violence and a sense of insecurity will disappear."
He sought suggestions from media professionals on what initiatives could be taken to ensure the journalists’ safety during the election period.
