The interim government has formed a pay commission to set a new wage structure for workers in government jobs.

The decision was taken at an Advisory Council meeting led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday.

Former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan has been named as the head of the panel and the commission has been instructed to submit its report within six months, according to a statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO).

About 1.5 million government officials and employees in the country currently receive salaries and allowances according to the 2015 pay scale.

As high inflation has driven up prices, the demand for a new salary structure has grown louder and become a major point of discussion. After the interim government came to power in August, there were demands for a dearness allowance for government employees.

Many were hoping the issue might be raised as part of the budget for the new fiscal year announced in June. However, it was not.

Finally, instead of a dearness allowance, Financial Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed announced special benefits for government officials and employees in the budget, which took effect from Jul 1.

According to the 2015 pay scale, there are currently 20 salary grades for government employees.

According to this structure, the basic salary of a first-class officer who passes the Bangladesh Civil Service exam is Tk 22,000 per month.

And, at the highest level, a secretary gets Tk 78,000 per month, a senior secretary gets Tk 82,000 a month, and a cabinet secretary and a principal secretary to the prime minister get Tk 86,000 as a basic salary.

Government employees receive separate allowances for house rent, medical and travel expenses, and other benefits along with their basic salary.

In addition, they receive two festival allowances a year and an additional allowance of 20 percent of their basic salary on Bengali New Year.

In the current budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, Tk 848.40 billion has been allocated for the salaries and allowances of government officials and employees, Tk 17.07 billion more than the previous fiscal year.
