The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a warning to city dwellers regarding fraudulent text messages demanding fines for fake digital traffic cases.
Prompted by widespread social media discussions, the DMP dismissed these text messages as “completely fabricated and untrue” on Monday.
Police clarified a real Traffic Division case is communicated through an official letter sent directly to the violator's address.
Official messages on traffic cases are only sent from two specific numbers: 01320-042207 and 01320-042227, the DMP said.
Citizens can contact these two numbers or the national emergency service hotline at 999 to verify any information related to artificial intelligence (AI) or video-recorded traffic cases.
Fraudulent rings traditionally become hyperactive ahead of festivals like Eid, targeting citizens through misleading phone calls, text messages, and phishing links.
Beyond the fake traffic fines, scammers have been attempting to swindle money via mobile financial services (MFS) by posing as bank officials, or by baiting victims with fake lotteries, Eid shopping prizes, and student stipends.
Police cautioned the public that the DMP's Traffic Division will never ask for any PIN code, password, or one-time password (OTP).
Capital residents have been urged not to be misled or deceived by unverified information circulating on social media.
The DMP also noted that authentic fines levied by the Traffic Division can only be paid online through Upay and Community Bank Bangladesh Limited (CBBL).
Police recently installed AI-driven cameras across different roads in the capital to restore discipline by automatically detecting violations under the Road Transport Act, 2018.
The initiative was inaugurated on Apr 29.
A public notice was issued on May 3 warning drivers and vehicle owners about video-enforced traffic cases.
Following a brief trial run, the automated case filing system officially commenced at designated points on May 7.
