Announcing the move, Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said that while it was for the World Court to decide whether genocide is being committed
The Senate confirmed his appointment on Friday. Ambassador Kristie Kenney succeeded in his post as State Department Counselor.
Secretary of State John Kerry welcomed the senate decision and said Shannon was “one of our nation’s most talented diplomats”.
Last year in December, Shannon visited Bangladesh as the Under Secretary for Political Affairs Designate and highly praised Bangladesh and its present leadership.
He said “Bangladesh matters” to the US. “This is a country the world listens to, whether on peacekeeping, climate change or counter-terrorism,” he had said.
