While his teammates, including captain Sergio Ramos, were cheered on upon their arrival, some boos were heard when Ronaldo held up the trophy on Sunday.

Thousands of fans, many who have stayed up for hours after the match, cheered the team on as they circled the Cibeles fountain to celebrate their success.

Coach Zinedine Zidane had lavished praise on Ronaldo after the three-time World Player of the Year appeared to struggle through the final.

He was subdued for long spells, wandering the pitch looking unhappy and out of sorts.

But the Portuguese striker fired home the winning penalty after full-back Juanfran missed Atletico's fifth penalty. The miss set up Ronaldo "for his moment of glory and, in a way, redemption" which "felt like a rather cheap redemption, something gifted to him rather than one he earned," said espnfc.com writer Miguel Delaney.

It handed Real a 5-3 win in the shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time and Ronaldo then performed his shirtless celebration, proudly showing off his muscular torso.

It's not the first time Ronaldo has been booed by Real Madrid fans.
