Final Score:  Brazil 2 - 1 Colombia

Goal Scorers: 7' Thiago Silva (BRA), 69' David Luiz (BRA), 79' James Rodriguez (COL)

Brazil are through thanks to an early goal from Thiago Silva and an excellent free kick from David Luiz in the second half. James Rodriguez kept things close with a late penalty. Brazil never looked smooth or free-flowing and they put challenge after challenge in on James to kept him relatively subdued.

Brazil won the game, but probably not the affection of many non-Brazilians. Neymar went off with a painful looking back injury. Additionally, Thiago Silva is suspended for the first semi-final against Germany in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

90+6'     THE REFEREE BLOWS THE FINAL WHISTLE! Only two words echo at the Estádio Castelão for Brazilian fans! BRAZIL WIN!

90+4'     Zuniga wins a free kick way out. Quintero will take it and the goalkeep comes up to join in. It's off Ramos for a goal kick.

90+3'     James Rodriguez whips it in. Ramos' header goes wide. The Brazilian players are anything but relaxed right now.

90+2'     Brazil get the ball into the Colombian half and then Hernanes plays a pass too long for Ramires. The Colombians push forward and win a corner.

90'          Five minutes of stoppage time signaled by the fourth official.

89'          Henrique comes on for Neymar, who was taken straight down the tunnel and looked to be in a lot of pain. Looked like he took a knee to the back.

88'          Corner to Colombia. It's a not great corner from Quintero to the near post. Brazil try to break but it's cut out. Now there are two Brazilians down on the turf: Neymar and Oscar.

Looks like the stretcher will be coming on for Neymar, who will go off. Neymar is covering his eyes and screaming in pain.

86'          Another substitution for Brazil: Paulinho off. Hernanes comes on.

82'          Brazil substitution: Ramires on, Hulk off at what is basically a crawling pace.

80'          Colombia substitution: Quintiero on, Cuadrado off.

79'        GOOOAAALLL!!! Rodriguez  to take the penalty. James runs, stutters and puts the ball to the left as Caesar dived to the right. They're back in it! Brazil 2, Colombia 1.

The topscorer of the competition just added another to his tally. He now has six goals to his name.

77'          PENALTY TO COLOMBIA! Caesar takes down Bacca as he races on to a James through ball. Caesar still down from the challenge with what looks like a legitimate if minor knee injury and canny piece of clock management.

Brazil's David Luiz (4) shoots to score his freekick past Colombia's David Ospina (L) during their quarter-finals match. Reuters

69'        GOOOOAAAAALLLL!!! LUUUIIIZZZ! James Rodriguez conceded a free kick from 30 yards. A thunderous strike by the Brazil centre back. He side foots the ball and it wobbles and dips in. It beats the diving Ospina to crash into the back of the net. Brazil 2, Colombia 0.

68'         ANOTHER YELLOW CARD! Rodriguez can't quite believe his eyes here. He is the second man in the book for a mistimed sliding tackle on Hulk, and he rightly thinks that it is harsh considering it is his first offence.

66'          DISALLOWED GOAL! Yepes has a goal called back. He scored as the ball came out of a scrum in the box after a James free kick.

64'          FIRST BOOKING! Ospina catches the cross and as the keeper is trying to quickly get the counterattack going, Thiago Silva knocks over the keeper. You can't do that. The Brazil captain, today’s goalscorer will have to sit out the semi-final, IF Brazil are to proceed.

59'          Colombia are starting to play here. Rodriguez chests down the ball at the edge of the box and volleys it over to Guarin who tries to hit it at goal first time. He gets under it and shoots over.

55'          Too many pauses in the game for fouls. The blistering tempo of the first half is completely lost.

53'          Cuadrado puts a set piece into the box. It's defended but them James cuts through the defense with a great pass. No teammate can quite get on top of the ball though. Shame. It deserved a great finish.

49'          The referee has proved lenience so far in the game, particularly on Brazil. No bookings yet. Within the last three minutes the Seleção have commited two successive fouls and a hand-ball.

46'          Brazil get the second half underway. Colombia has made a change: Ramos on, Ibabo off.

Half Time

46+2'     The referee blows for half time.

45'          The fourth official signals one minute of added time to the half.

42'          Brazil get a free kick for Zeniga's foul on Neymar. 25 yards out on the left. Neymar takes it and it's well wide to the right.

39'          Silva hacks down Cuadrado 40 yards out. James swings it in but Caesar collects it fairly easily. Colombia are not pleased with the number of nicks they are having to put up with from Brazil.

36'          Rodriguez plays is Amero on the left flank. Amero crosses for Cuadrado who controls the ball just outside the box and is fouled by Fernandinho. Free-kick Colombia – in a position of potential.

The two-touch free-kick is dealt with forward charge by the Brazilian defence and deflected way out – cleared.

34'          Brazil charge down the right and win another corner. However, the corner is routed out for a goal kick.

32'          The game's pace is incredible! David Luiz races forward with the ball. He's dispossesed by Zapata, who sprints forward and is tackled by Oscar. Oscar then steps forward and pushes the ball at Colombia.

27'          Hulk messes up stepovers and only succeeds in backheeling the ball in the opposite direction he was moving in. He makes up for it by playing a nice reverse pass to Marcelo as he retrieves the ball and then hitting a hard shot on target a few moments later.

25'          Free kick argument! Brazil want to take it quickly. Colombia don't want to let them. Shouting ensues. The kick is taken quickly and Oscar springs away with the ball at his feet. He tries to find Neymar, unmarked, with a diagonal ball but it's blocked. Then Paulinho gets into the box with the ball at his feet and Fred to pass to. He stumbles and then falls over under a fair challenge.

22'          GREAT RUN FROM JAMES RODRIGUEZ! He picked up the ball in his own half and turns and spins and dribbles straight past Maicon. He creates a four on two from almost nothing but Cuadrado kills the break with a poor pass.

20'          OSPINA DENIES BRAZIL TWICE IN SUCCESSION! Hulk interchanges really well with Oscar and Neyman, forcing a fine save from Ospina. The rebound comes to Oscar who hits it goalwards. Ospina makes another save and Brazil win a corner. Better defense now from Colombia and Rodriguez gets some time on the ball in Brazil's final third.

17'          Hulk from Brazil directs a ball squarely in the box, but it's intercepted by a Colombian defender.

14'          Colombia responding positively by moving forward. They have to be on the offensive for conceding early. Still nothing for Cesar to do, but Pekerman will be pleased with the response.

11'          Quadrado wins a corner with a deflected shot. He had it on target and it may have beaten Caesar. The corner is very poor -- it's headed away by the first Brazilian defender.

7'             GOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL!!! Brazil take the lead. Neymar swings a corner into the middle and Silva is left completely free at the back post to bundle the ball home after the initial glut of players had missed the delivery.

5'             Fred is bundled to the ground by Sanchez and earns his team a free kick in shooting range. Neymar's shot edges wide in disappointing fashion.

1'             Colombia kick-off, and the game is underway.

For every goal that Colombia have scored against the Brazilians, Brazil have scored five.
Brazil's 15 victories include a 9-0 rout at the 1957 Copa America, a 6-2 drubbing in Rio de Janeiro in 1969 and a crushing 6-0 win in the same city in 1977.
In their 25 previous meetings Colombia have won just twice and the last time was 23 years ago, before the baby-faced Rodriguez was even born.
