Suranjit’s last rites at Sunamganj on Monday

The last rites for veteran politician Suranjit Sengupta will be held at his ancestral home in Sunamganj’s Derai on Monday.

The Awami League Advisory Council member had been one of the youngest members of the Provincial Assembly and has been an MP in almost all parliaments since Bangladesh’s independence.

He passed away while under treatment at Dhaka’s Labaid Hospital on Sunday.

The body of the political leader has been taken to his home at the capital's Jigatala, his personal assistant Quamrul Haque told bdnews24.com.

At 12pmm the body will be taken to Dhakeswari Temple and then to the Parliament premises at 3pm.

It would be taken to the parliament for lawmakers to pay their last respects, said Awami League General Secretary and Minister of Roads and Transport Obaidul Quader.

The body will be taken to Sylhet by helicopter on Monday morning. It will arrive at his ancestral home at 10am. The last rites are scheduled for 3pm.

Suranjit Sengupta was born in 1946 in Anwarapur in Sunamganj. After completing his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Dhaka University, he completed his LLB at Central Law College and entered the legal profession.

The former minister was the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and a member of the Supreme Court Bar Council.
