His younger brother AK Abdul Momen returned to Bangladesh last year after serving as the permanent representative to the UN.

Muhith, who will be 86 by the time of the next general election in 2019, represents Sylhet-1 in the Parliament.

On Jun 2, he presented his eighth budget for the Awami League government after he became minister in 2009. He had presented two budget plans during military ruler HM Ershad’s regime.

Speaking at a meeting on developmental works done in his constituency, he said being a minister he has been unable to carry out his duties as MP.

“No, I’m not doing (another election),” he said.

But during the Awami League’s previous term, Muhith had said his health will not allow another term as minister but he later accepted the finance ministry portfolio.

Was he certain now? ‘Yes, yes,” he told reporters. When asked of a future candidate for the Sylhet constituency, he said, “Momen.”

“He is preparing the ground. We can’t say... We have to check if he has acceptability...the party’s position. After all of that ... but he is in the field.”
