In a letter, Ershad is also said to have congratulated Hasina for becoming the Prime Minister for the third time.

Hasina’s information affairs adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said Ershad’s letter had arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

“Mr Ershad has congratulated the Prime Minister for forming the new government.”

“And he thanked [Hasina] for making him a special envoy to the Prime Minister,” Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.

Hasina’s party, the Awami League, formed government for a second successive term, winning by a predictable landslide in the Jan 5 polls boycotted by the BNP and its allies.

Sworn in on Sunday, the new Cabinet has ministers from the Jatiya Party. Ershad, a former military dictator, was appointed the Prime Minister’s special envoy with the status of a minister.
Jatiya Party has emerged as the main opposition in the 10th Parliament and Ershad’s wife, former First Lady Raushan Ershad, has been named the Leader of the Opposition.
According to Raushan, Ershad had declined to become the Opposition Leader as he was the President of Bangladesh once.
