“But their magic has been exposed to the people,” party Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a programme in the capital.

The BNP spokesperson alleged that the ruling Awami League was conspiring to get another term by staging a ‘one-sided election’.

He said the BNP would not run for any election which would not be overseen by a non-party caretaker government.

“I want to make it clear that the BNP will not allow any election under any party government,” he said.

Fakhrul alleged that the government was plotting to foil the ongoing anti-government movement demanding restoration of the caretaker government system.

“They are misguiding the people by putting blame on the BNP for every issue that surfaces. But all of their moves will go in vain since the people now know what they really are,” he said.

The programme was arranged marking the International Mother Language Day that falls on Thursday.

Speaking at the programme, BNP Standing Committee member Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said: “I can clearly see that a conspiracy is going on against democracy.”

Another Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed said: “The ruling clique is dreaming of staging the general election under the party government. If they pursue that path, they will suffer the consequences worse than those faced by autocrats.”
