The appeal was heard at Hatton Cross tribunal court on Jun 8. The UK Home Office can appeal the decision if they wish to do so.

“I’m very tired at the moment, but I’ll be very happy when it sinks in,” Hassan said after the hearing.

Hassan moved to London’s Stoke Newington with his aunt at the age of five after his father fell ill.

The family had hoped for his eventual return to Bangladesh, but his father’s death and his mother’s deteriorating health led Hassan to stay back in the UK.

Hassan was given a place on a six-year accountancy apprenticeship with KPMG, but his petition to stay in the UK was rejected in February 2016.

His story inspired an online petition by his friends, which eventually gained 28,500 signatures.

“It was so amazing to get so much support from the wider community. It was really great,” Hassan said.

“To everyone, who has shown their support, thank you so much. It really does mean a lot.”

KPMG had agreed to keep his position open in case the won his appeal.

“It’s really excellent news that I can still go to KPMG,” Hassan said. “I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
