Its Vice-President for Sustainable Development Rachel Kyte and Vice-President for South Asia Region Philippe Le Houerou lauded Dhaka at separate programmes in Washington on Thursday (local time).

They held meetings with Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman. Top IMF officials and finance ministers of several other countries attended the meeting.

Rahman said the top World Bank officials told him that the international community’s concerns over Bangladesh were easing off.

“Many have opined that Bangladesh’s economy is making a turnaround,” he said after the meeting.

He said both the IMF and the Washington-based global lender had expressed interests to give more assistance in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development projects.

“Bangladesh’s reserves crossed $20 billion this week making the economic base stronger,” he told bdnews24.com. “Foreign investors will now be more interested to invest in Bangladesh.”
The central bank governor said it was a “huge achievement” for the country.
Finance Minister Muhith went to Washington on Thursday to attend the three-day World Bank and IMF seminar starting from Apr 11.
Rahman went to the US two days earlier.
Both have been discussing Bangladesh’s current economic situation and various ongoing projects with other economists.
Meanwhile, Rahman had been included in the 19-member UNEP committee.
