Bowling coach Walsh passes his wisdom on to Mustafizur

While some of the Bangladesh cricketers were resting after the morning session of running and workout at the fitness camp, Mustafizur Rahman was at the indoor nets with Courtney Walsh on Tuesday.

The Tigers’ Caribbean bowling mentor spent quite some time giving tips to the young seamer on bowling action at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium training ground.

Walsh trained Mustafizur separately on Monday too, and will continue the routine for some more days.

Neither of them, however, revealed much about the kind of training or their aim. All bdnews24.com could get out of the bowling coach was, “Everything is going perfectly. He is improving well.”

It appeared, however, Walsh was advising the 21-year-old pacer about how to use the bowling crease.

Mustafizur was shuffling between bowling away from the stumps and then from closer to them, also learning which way the front of his foot should face during delivery strides.

Walsh repeatedly showed him in what position his shoulder, head and bowling arm should be. They also worked on deliveries coming into right-handed batsmen.

Mustafizur tried out the drills with a shortened run-up, making it clear that the aim is to adjust his bowling action and accuracy of the delivery pitch.

Since his return from a shoulder surgery last year, Mustafizur has rarely shown glimpses of his lethal abilities, which gave Bangladesh a glorious spell of success at home in 2015 and helped IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden title.

He has grabbed four wickets in two games in New Zealand after recovery but was not as effective as he had been. He then did quite well in Sri Lanka, taking six wickets in three ODIs, but was quite expensive by his standards. However, he shone in the last Twenty20 by taking 4 wickets.

The maverick youngster also did quite well at the tri-nation series in Ireland where he picked up seven wickets from three innings.

But he lacked the edge in the Champions Trophy and managed just a wicket from Bangladesh’s four games into the semifinals.

The men in red and green have had a packed schedule since Walsh’s recruitment last September. He had got little time to work with the pacers until now.

But now, a pace bowling camp is set to begin soon with 15 bowlers.
