A fine half-century from captain Charlotte Edwards guided England to a competitive 153-7 after electing to bat first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.

In the chase, Nigar Sultana (35) and Salma Khatun (32 not out) paired in a defiant fifth wicket stand but could not recover from the early setbacks.

Bangladesh managed to score 117-6, their highest total in 20-over format.

Bangladesh toporder toiled at the start of the chase. Openers Sharmin Akhter Supta (0) and Ayasha Rahman (2) went back early leaving their team on 14 for 2 in the sixth over.

Fargana Hoque and Rumana Ahmed tried to plot a recovery, but their quick departure put Bangladesh in a tight spot.

Fargana was dismissed after scoring 19 off 25 balls while putting 24 on the scoreboard with Rumana, who ran herself out for a run-a-ball 19.

Sultana and Salma then cracked eight boundaries and a six between them in a 49-ball 64-run partnership, but could not repair the early damage.

Anya Shrubsole returned 2 for 27 for England.

Earlier, England openers Edwards (60 off 51 balls) and Tammy Beaumont (18) were off to a breezy start, scoring 34 in 4.1 overs.

Bangladesh skipper Jahanara Alam then castled Beaumont before Sarah Taylor (9) and Heather Knight (1) walked back in the space of two balls.

The 2009 champions were left on 71 for 3 in the 11th over.

But Edwards displayed superb resolve, cracking seven boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking. She shared a 47-run partnership with Natalie Sciver (27).

Rumana had the England skipper stumped before some late hitting from Danielle Wyatt (15) and Katherine Brunt (17) took England past 150.

Jahanara was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh, returning 3 for 32.

Bangladesh had lost their Group B opener against hosts India by 72 runs.
