World-class Mustafizur Rahman caught us lacking, says South Africa's Temba Bavuma

Discussions over sessions and hours of planning over how to handle Mustafizur Rahman have yielded little for South Africa who have had trouble reading his deliveries.

Their topscorer Temba Bavuma thinks the 19-year old Bangladeshi pace sensation’s world-class spell turned the tables on them on Tuesday

Mustafizur stormed into headlines with his record-breaking performance in the ODI series against India last month and went on to impress in the one-dayers against South Africa.

So the fact that a big chunk of the Proteas team talk revolved around the young seamer came as no surprise.

But that did not stop Mustafizur returning a debut haul of 4 for 37 on the opening day of the first Test between the two sides at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

His 14th over played a pivotal part in the match. In a magnificent spell of seam bowling, he took three wickets in four balls to crush the middle-order.

The Proteas could not recover from the blow and were bowled out for 248.

Bavuma, in at five, fought a lone battle and slowly ran out of partners before he became the last South Africa batsman to fall.

When he snared his fourth wicket, that of Bavumba, whose 54 was the only half-century in the tourists’ first innings; it was only the third time Bangladesh had taken all 10 wickets on the first day of a Test.

Bavuma revealed what his team had discussed before the match in a press conference at the close of play.

"I am not much of a video guy, but I talked to the guys to get a kind of awareness and understanding of how different it is facing him, especially those quick cutters.

"We were just trying to have some kind of a game plan against him.”

The 25-year old managed only a run off 15 balls from Mustafizur and admitted that he had trouble reading the teenager’s variations.

"It did take me a bit of a while (to read Mustafizur). His ball grips a lot on the wicket so you generally have to wait a lot longer with the ball.

"That left-armer was world class and unfortunately we just got caught wanting today."

He lauded Mushfiqur and his men for outthinking them all through the day.

"The guys (Bangladesh) stuck to their game plan and strategies, and Bangladesh’s skill was on top today.”
