The price of domestic beef will be set at Tk 475 per kilogram. The price of Indian beef and buffalo meat has been set at Tk 440 per kilogram. The price of mutton is set at Tk 725 per kg and the price of goat meet has been set at Tk 620 per kg.

The prices were set after a meeting between the Dhaka South City Corporation mayor and meat traders on Tuesday.

According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), current beef prices range from Tk 480 to Tk 500, while current mutton prices range from Tk 650 to Tk 750.

Last year, the price of beef had been set at Tk 420, buffalo at Tk 400, mutton at Tk 570, and goat and sheep meat at Tk 470.

The price must be maintained by traders in the Dhaka Metropolitan area until the 26th of Ramadan, said Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon. The decision was taken for the public interest, he said.

“The price was set after speaking with everyone at the meeting. I am advising everyone to abide by the price. A monitoring team will be working around the clock. Steps will be taken if anyone is found to be in violation of the agreement.”

The price will be in effect for department stores as well as open-air markets, he said.

The prices will be maintained after the end of Ramadan, said Bangladesh Meat Traders Union General Secretary Rabiul Alam said at the meeting. It may, however, fluctuate about Tk 5-10, he said.

Meat traders have abandoned plans for a strike during Ramadan after taking into consideration the suffering of the people, he said.

“To honour and preserve the holiness of the holy month we will withdraw our plans to strike,” he said.
