Shares worth Tk 14.78 billion changed hands at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on Wednesday.

That was the highest trading volume in DSE in a single day since Jul 28, 2011, when shares worth Tk 18.04 billion were traded.

Former DSE president Shakil Rizvi told bdnews24.com that a huge spurt in block transaction in Khulna Power shares may explain the spurt in trading and the upward movement of the index.

"Tk 8.23 billion worth Khulna Power shares were traded in block transactions on Wednesday. These moved from one account of the sponsor to another account, which explains the spurt in trading volumes," Rizvi said.

The DSE index rose by 15 points or 0.31 percent to end at 4,765 on the fourth trading day of the week.

Of the 321 companies and mutual funds traded, the value of 161 went up but those of 120 went down while 40 traded flat.

The index at Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) rose by 60 points to end at 14,670 .

Shares worth Tk 486.1 million traded at port city bourse -- 32.17 percent more than on Tuesday.

Of the 257 scrips traded, 134 went up on Wednesday, but the value of 95 came down and 28 remained unchanged.
