Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader told reporters on Thursday that trucks will not be allowed on the highways three days before and after Eid-ul-Azha.

But trucks carrying essential commodities and readymade garments for export will be exempted, he said.

The announcements came after an inter-ministerial meeting of the railway, shipping and road transport ministries, home and LGRD ministries, law enforcement agencies and transport owners at a restaurant in capital Dhaka.

The decisions were taken to ease motorists' suffering while travelling during the upcoming Eid and Durga Puja holidays.

Based on the sighting of the moon, Eid-ul-Azha holidays are supposed to begin on Oct 5 and end on Oct 7.

Before that, another public holiday is also scheduled for Oct 4, the last day of this year's Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community.

Quader said a total of 36 decisions were taken at the meeting.

He demanded that all broken and battered roads and highways in the country must be repaired before the holidays began.

"I don't want to hear any excuses, the issue must be resolved. The roads must be made better to travel for the people."
