In mid-October, the US authorities had recalled the same product from America's market on the same ground.

In a media statement on Saturday, the group said it had been informed by the importers of higher level of lead in several batches of its turmeric powder exported to the US.

After the allegations were raised, the group said its product was tested at various national and international testing facilities like the BSTI and BCSIR.

Several tests conducted at the company revealed turmeric powder containing higher level of lead while others showed no lead at all, said the statement.

PRAN-RFL's Director (Marketing) Kamruzzaman Kamal said their primary observations suggested turmeric produced in several areas of Bangladesh contained excessive levels of lead.

This may not be the case for turmeric produced in other areas, he said in the statement.

The group said it had taken the decision considering ‘public health concerns’.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had said it had found up to 53 parts per million (ppm) of lead in the turmeric product.

A notice from the FDA had warned that such level of lead was dangerous for pregnant women, infants and young children.

Concerns already exist over expiry dates on food products being inaccurate in products imported from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.

There are also consumer concerns about the processing of these products.
