He is a self-proclaimed Razakar , prosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal told reporters after the verdict on Thursday.
Elected municipality mayor of Nagarkanda in 2011, Khokon Razakar has been in hiding since the investigation into his war crime started in 2012.
Khokon, who was affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami before the war, joined BNP after it was founded by Ziaur Rahman.
“We’ve been able to prove his role in the mass killings and other crimes against humanity in court,” said Badal.
“Ten among the eleven charges against him have been proven. He has been awarded death for six changes and various jail terms for the rest which adds up to 40 years.”
The law enforcing agencies in Bangladesh have been directed to arrest the 66-year old war criminal, he said.
“His sentence will be carried out once he is arrested.”
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 in its observation said he organised killings of unarmed civilians during 1971, he said.
