Bangabandhu, along with most of his family, was killed by a group of rogue army officials on Aug 15, 1975 in a military coup. Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana survived as they were abroad at that time.
The prime minister placed a wreath at Bangabandhu's grave in Golpalganj's Tungiparha and stood in silence for a while.
Chiefs of the three services and the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division gave an armed salute while a smartly turned-out contingent gave a guard of honour as bugle played the last post.
Afterwards, a special prayer was offered for the salvation of the victims of the Aug 15 massacre.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, PM's Security Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadeque and Chief Whip of Parliament ASM Feroze, among others, were present.
Several members of Parliament, senior ruling Awami League leaders, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, prime minister's Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikdar and Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury were present.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, too, paid her respects.
A wreath was placed at the grave on behalf of the ruling Awami League.
Various affiliates of the ruling party also paid their respects to the man who spearheaded Bangladesh's struggle for freedom.
