A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member received bullet wound during the clash on Saturday night, Additional Superintendent of Police MD Zakaria said.
He said the clash erupted when the authorities refused to announce the results of Charitaluk Government Primary School centre at Bholab union council after the counting ended around 8:30pm.
He said the agitated villagers torched the car of Executive Magistrate Zakaria Hossain and three other police vehicles.
Alamgir Hossain Tito, the BNP candidate for the chairman’s post, said police fired over 100 rounds of bullets and more than 50 rounds of tear gas shells, injuring at least 20.
He alleged Presiding Officer Moniruzzaman ‘mysteriously concealed’ the results after the counting.
He said the supporters of member post candidates confined the presiding officer and other officials at the centre after hearing that results had been announced at other centres.
Roopganj Police Station OC Ismail Hossain said police brought the situation under control after 10pm.
