Witnesses said the incident happened on Wednesday noon in front of university pro-vice chancellor and other officials.
The vice-chancellor said the Godagarhi-Tanore MP came to his office to ‘threaten’ him.
MP Chowdhury admitted that he had gone to the vice chancellor’s office but denied having insulted Prof Mizanuddin.
The VC told bdnews24.com the MP had called him on his telephone at noon when he was in a meeting.
“I told him that I was in a meeting and will speak to him later.
“Hearing me, he shouted over phone and wanted to come to my office. He, along with his supporters, reached my office 10 minutes later.”
The vice chancellor said he sat with the MP postponing the meeting.
“In presence of all, the MP started swearing at me. I think I, as a university vice chancellor, have been insulted by the words he used,” he added.
Several university officials said Chowdhury came to Prof Mizanuddin to speak about an issue of Shah Makhdum Medical College. The Rajshahi University-affiliated institution’s board is headed by the MP.
Requesting anonymity, an official said: “Several students have been admitted to the college recently flouting rules. Rajshahi University’s college affairs officials have fined the college Tk 2.5 million for that.”
“The MP got angry with the vice chancellor due to that,” he added.
When contacted, MP Chowdhury told bdnews24.com: “The allegations which have been levelled against me are completely false.”
“I went to him to appeal for exemption of the fine on the college. I’ve no idea why the allegation has been brought against me.”
