A Gazipur court has sentenced 11 people to death for the murder of Jalal Uddin Sarkar, former president of Awami Juba League’s Kapasia Upazila unit, more than a decade ago.

Additional District and Sessions judge Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan delivered the verdict on Monday.
The judge also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each.
All the convicts belonged to the local BNP unit and its affiliated organisations.
Six of the 11 convicted were present at court during the delivery of the verdict.
They are the BNP’s Kapasia unit activists Farhad Hossain, Md Belayet Hossain Biltu, Ataur Rahman, Md Jaynal Abedin; Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Kapasia unit former president Md Faruk Hossain and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal’s Kapasia unit former president Md Abdul Alim.
The five other convicts still absconding are Kapasia Chhatra Dal former president A Halim Fakir, former member Al Amin, Juba Dal member Joj Mia and former member Mahbubur Rahman, and Kapasia College Chhatra Dal unit’s former president Jewel.
Court Police Inspector Md Rabiul Islam said the convicts would be able to appeal to the High Court against the death penalty within seven days.
Quoting case details, he said Jalal Uddin Sarkar, who was 35, was hacked to death in public in the Upazila’s Balkhela Bazar area on Aug 17, 2003 following a political dispute.
