The government fears local Awami League leader Nur Hossain, suspected to be behind one of the most horrific crimes in the recent past, may try to sneak into India to evade the police dragnet.
Benapole immigration OC Jahangir Alam said, “We have taken special measures to ensure that the accused in Narayanganj murder, blacklisted terrorists, and accused Jamaat-Shibir activists are unable to leave the country.”
Seven men, including Narayanganj ward councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were abducted from the city on Apr 27.
Their bloated bodies were found floating in the Shitalakhya River three days later.
The macabre murders have outraged Bangladeshis amid allegations that elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was used for the crimes.
Nur Hossain, Siddhirganj Awami League unit vice-president and a city councillor, has gone into hiding since the incident.
Police on Saturday raided his home and detained 12 men from there.
Meanwhile, the district administration revoked the licences of all 11 weapons belonging to Hossain and his associates.
