The fire burnt down many shops, pushing the owners of the outlets to near-bankruptcy in the festive season.

The blaze started at the market at around 7am on Thursday, said Rokonuzzaman, head of Mymensingh Fire Service.

Nine units of fire fighters from Mymensingh, Muktagachha and Trishal rushed to the spot to control the blaze.

Hours on, smokes were still billowing over the market.

Mymensingh Fire Service Acting Director Shahidul Haque said the firemen are working to douse the fire despite insufficient water.

As many as 138 stores, mostly of clothing, shoes, jewellery, cosmetics and tailoring, were housed in the market, said Abdul Hoque, president of the hawkers’ association.

“The people who were present on the scene managed to save the products of only four or five shops. The rest of the products were burnt down.”
