Japan fulfilling PM Abe’s commitment to Bangladesh: Outgoing ambassador

Japan is implementing different development projects in Bangladesh as part of the commitment Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Japan, the outgoing Japanese ambassador says.

Masato Watanabe said this during the farewell meeting with Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Abe made a Yen 600 billion or around $5.5 billion commitment to Bangladesh's development during the visit of Hasina in May 2014.

Later, the two countries signed agreements to finance different projects such as Jamuna Railway Bridge Construction, development of a mass rapid transit system in Dhaka, Matarbari coal-fired power plant, expansion of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, construction and repair of Kanchpur, Meghna and Gumti bridges, among others.

The ambassador expressed his optimism that the “excellent” bilateral relations between the two countries would be strengthened further.

The foreign minister thanked the Japanese government for their continued supports towards Bangladesh in different development projects.
