The High Court has upheld death sentences for 15 convicts.

Death penalties awarded by the trial court to 11 other convicts have been commuted to life in prison.

The court also upheld various prison terms given to nine other convicts.

Justices Bhabani Prasad Singha and Mustafa Zaman Islam announced the verdict on Tuesday after hearing appeals and death references of the convicts.

“This is an exemplary verdict. I feel satisfied,” Alam told journalists in his immediate reaction.

“The four main culprits and those in Major Arif’s team have been sentenced to death. Three out of the six who helped make the sand bags received the same penalty,” said the country's chief law officer.

“One will serve in jail for life and two will serve seven years there. Life terms were given to all the associates of Nur Hossain. Seven from the runner team have been sentenced 10 years of jail terms.

“Another one, Ashrafuzzaman, who arranged syringe, was given death penalty by the trial court. But the High Court commuted it to life in prison,” Alam said.

“Anyone can commit a crime—be it someone from a defence force or someone holding a high rank. We should not hold the entire organisation responsible for that,” said the attorney general.

When asked if the State will appeal against the verdict commuting sentences of the 11, he said he would take the decision after reading the full verdict.
