US sentences man to 60 years in prison for 2014 murder of Bangladesh-origin taxi driver

A US court has sentenced a man to 60 years in jail for murdering a cab driver of Bangladeshi origin from Stamford City in Connecticut in 2014.

Convict Shota Mekoshvili, 32, from Georgia stabbed cab driver Mohammed Kamal Uddin, 47, was found murdered in a secluded neighbourhood in Stamford on Aug 27 that year.

His abandoned taxi, which had crashed into a wall, was found nearby.

Police said the Stamford taxi employee was stabbed up to 16 times in his torso.

Stamford police arrested Mekoshvili the same day.

Prosecutors said it was an attempted robbery that led to a deadly struggle.

Stamford Superior Court judge John F Blawie pronounced the sentence on Tuesday.

Kamal Uddin, hailing from Chittagong’s Anwara Upazila, lived at the town’s Dotel Road with his wife Razia Shalia and only child. He moved to the US in 1992.

Razia and their son, now seven-year old, went to the court to hear the sentencing.

She said she was happy with the sentence, and thought Kamal’s departed soul would also feel the same.
