The paving of a kilometre-long stretch of the road in the Upazila was completed on Wednesday, said Engineer Fazlul Haq of the Local Government Engineering Department.

An inspection shows that the pitch has come off several sections of the road.

Locals say the construction used low-quality materials.

According to Kamlabari Union Parishad Ward-4 member Abdus Salam, locals had raised questions over the quality of roadwork, but had been ignored by the local administration.

“You can see the result just five days after its completion,” he said.

Engineer Haq said the project cost Tk 5.6 million.

“The quality of the work is a bit poor. The contractors will fix it,” he said.

According to Lalmonirhat Local Government Engineering Division Executive Engineer SSM Zakiul Rahman, the problem was caused by a lack of bitumen.

Those responsible would be held accountable for their negligence, he said.

Contractor Sahidul Islam was unwilling to speak to reporters about the incident.
