The booth, set up by the Bangladesh Embassy, accompanied similar displays from the other BIMSTEC countries - Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Each booth exhibited collections of the country’s national products and included information on the nation’s culture and notable tourist destinations.

Bone china and ceramic ware, a variety of jute products, tea and sarees were among the products displayed at the Bangladesh booth.

Hosted by Deputy Foreign Minister of Thailand Virasakdi Futrakal, the event on Saturday served as a reception for the international conference on ‘Strengthening Cultural Linkages in the Bay of Bengal Region’ organised by the Indian Studies Center of Chulalongkorn University, the BIMSTEC Secretariat and the Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Deputy Foreign Minister Futrakal encouraged the leaders of the BIMSTEC countries to intensify their efforts to realise the ‘objectives and purposes’ of BIMSTEC.

The minister praised the steps that had been taken at the BIMSTEC Leaders Retreat in October, 2016, which included cooperative efforts to fight terrorism, alleviate climate change and develop trade, energy, transport and tourism.

The BIMSTEC countries, with their 1.5 billion people and combined GDP of $2.8 trillion, had immense geographic and economic potential, he said.

Ambassadors and Heads of Missions from the seven BIMSTEC countries in Bangkok, BIMSTEC Secretary-General Sumith Nakandala, Asian diplomats in Thailand, and other eminent officials, and members of academia were also present at the event. During his address at the event, BIMSTEC Secretary General Nakandala thanked Bangladesh government for hosting the BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka.
