Bangladesh proposes UNESCO Annual World Cultural Conference

Bangladesh has put up a formal proposal to the UNESCO to organise an Annual World Cultural Conference.

The plan was presented by Bangladesh's Representative to the UNESCO Executive Board Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury during a national statement at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Tuesday.

Kamal Chowdhury is also the Principal Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office .

The program would bring together cultural activists, religious leaders, writers, poets and artists to discuss ways to foster peace and harmony among different peoples and cultures.

Dr Kamal Chowdhury also informed the UN body about Bangladesh’s achievements regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), emphasising the successes in the education of girls and women’s empowerment.

He also highlighted the various efforts by the government to address the needs of those with physical and mental disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum.

He also urged UNESCO to expand its role in opposing terrorism and violent extremism, which he called a major global challenge of our time.

From Apr 19 to Apr 21, the Bangladesh representative also chaired the Committee on Convention and Recommendation sub-committee of the UNESCO Executive Board.

The Bangladesh delegation to the UNESCO Executive Board meeting also includes Secondary and Higher Education Secretary Md Sohorab Hossain and Bangladesh Ambassador to France M Shahiul Islam.

The current UNESCO Executive Board session began on Apr 24 and is chaired by the President of the UNESCO Board Michael Worbs. UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova is also attending the meetings.
