"The condition, caused by the weak eastern wind and the impact of a low in the west, is likely to improve from Wednesday," Senior Meteorologist Abdul Mannan told bdnews24.com.

Weather experts say the heavy rains, coupled with Nor'wester winds, are 'untimely' because they have occurred much before the regular monsoon.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 as the sea remains rough.

The Nor'wester winds prompted the Met office to advise river ports across Bangladesh to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 2.

The whole country, including capital Dhaka has been experiencing heavy to medium showers since Friday.

On Sunday, Dhaka residents witnessed a unique phenomenon – stratus clouds, in which spread-out grey layers of clouds appear at ground level in the form of fog - followed by rains and wind.

Rain and storm continued in phases until Monday noon.

"The impact of eastern weak winds coupled with the low in west has caused the untimely rains," said senior weatherman Mannan. "It's rare but not abnormal."

According to the Met Office, 21 millimetres of rain was recorded in Dhaka on Monday between 6am and 12pm. The highest rain of 62 millimetres in the country was recorded at Patuakhali and Chittagong's Kutibdia.

In Monday's weather forecast, the Met Office said rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at many places over Barisal, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, at a few places over Khulna, Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.

Places in Barisal, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions have see moderately heavy to very heavy rainfalls.

Day and night temperature may rise by 1-2° Celsius across the country.
