The fire service said flames erupted at the Classic Shoe Company factory in the capital's Jatrabarhi around 11am on Monday.

It took 11 firefighting units almost three hours to douse the flames, said the fire service.

Police said at least 100 people were working the factory when the fire broke out. "No casualties have been reported," Jatrabarhi police's Sub Inspector Tapash Mandal told bdnews24.com

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang before the fire broke out.

"I was out of the factory and heard a bang before spotting the flames," Moazzem Hossain, the marketing in-charge of the factory, told bdnews24.com.

He said the fire started at the factory's PVC unit, responsible for manufacturing soles and laces for shoes.

"A huge amount of chemicals was kept there. Around a hundred people were working when the fire started. We believe all of them managed to get out."
