The posts had not been filled due to lack of candidates from freedom fighter, women and small ethnic group quotas in the 35th batch of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS).

The government has also decided to relax the rule for preserving priority quota for 737 posts of 36th BCS and appoint 802 candidates to non-cadre posts, who passed 35th BCS examinations but were not included in any cadre.

The decisions were cleared at Monday's Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters about the decisions after the meeting.

He said the preserved vacant posts of the 35th BCS freedom fighter, women and small ethnic group quotas would be filled up by adding those to the relevant cadres of the 36th BCS.

The secretary said after the relaxation of preservation of priority quota posts of the 36th BCS, the posts will now be filled up with candidates from the top of the merit list.

"The freedom fighter quota has not been changed. The Cabinet has only relaxed it," he said.

In line with a previous order, the vacant posts of freedom fighter quota will have to be preserved.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) recommended relaxing the rule for 36th BCS because there were only 82 candidates from the quotas against 737 posts.
