His former colleague at the foreign ministry Ambassador Mustafa Kamal in a Facebook post requested “all well-wishers to pray for his early recovery”.

He said Quayes, who was also a foreign secretary between 2009 and 2012, had fallen “seriously ill (likely to be a relapse of his earlier emergency when he was foreign secretary) and currently in ICU”.

He earlier suffered a respiratory failure with septicaemia, a life-threatening blood infection, in 2O12. He recovered from the Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Officials at the embassy in Brazil did not make any comment about his disease when asked. One suggested contacting with the External Publicity Wing.

Director General of External Publicity Wing of foreign ministry Lutfor Rahman, however, could not be reached, despite several attempts.

Quayes has been the Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK before his current assignment.
