“Suranjit Sengupta was not just a politician,” the president said, “he played a crucial role in drafting the Bangladesh’s constitution. And, as a parliamentarian of skill and experience, he was unmatched.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also expressed her condolences, saying Bangladesh had lost an experienced parliamentarian.
"Our people have lost a patriot, our Parliament has lost an experienced politician and we have lost a leader who has been at the forefront of every progressive political movement."
Suranjit passed away while under treatment for a shortage of haemoglobin in his blood at Dhaka’s Labaid Hospital.
The veteran politician had been one of the youngest members of the ‘70s Provincial Assembly and was a member of almost every Parliament in the four decades since Bangladesh’s independence.
“The contributions of Suranjit Sengupta will always be remembered by the people,” said President Hamid. “Bangladesh has suffered a great loss at his passing.”
The president expressed his deep sympathy for the bereaved family and prayed for the peace of the departed.
