A team of 850 personnel were sought in a letter sent by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations to Masud Bin Momen, Bangladesh’s permanent representative and envoy to the UN.

“The process to send the peacekeepers as soon as possible is already underway,” Bangladesh mission spokesperson Noor Elahi Mina told bdnews24.com.

In October, the UN requested Bangladesh for an engineering company of 260 personnel for operations in South Sudan.

The new team would be stationed at Wau region of the African country.

There are currently 195,000 men and women from 123 nations working in various volatile regions. Of them 6,772, including 196 female personnel, are from Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will have the second highest number of personnel serving in peacekeeping missions, 7,882 police and army officials, once the two new teams join in.

Ethiopia has the highest contribution with 8,326 peacekeeping personnel.
