Cyclone Nada-induced bad weather forces Signal No.2 at Bangladesh ports

The Met Office has advised the maritime ports to keep Distant Warning Signal No. 2 hoisted due to rough weather caused by cyclone 'Nada' in the Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologist Abdur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that there was no fear of the storm coming towards Bangladesh despite the warning signal.

The cyclone has been named 'Nada' by Oman in line with the cyclone-naming convention followed by the South Asian countries. The word 'Nada' is used in Oman to describe ferocity.

Rahman said a low occurred in the Bay on Tuesday and deepened to a cyclone in the afternoon on Wednesday.

"There is no fear that the cyclone will hit the Bangladesh coasts. It may cross the coast along Sri Lanka and India's Andhra Pradesh," he added.

According to the Met Office bulletin, the cyclone was centered about 1635 kms south-southwest of Chittagong Port, 1570 kms south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port, 1550 kms south-southwest of Mongla Port and 1535 kms southsouthwest of Payra Port at 6pm.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a west or northwesterly direction further.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts or squalls.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay and deep sea have been advised not to venture into the deep sea and proceed with caution till further notice.
