Police claim killing JMB activist during 'shootout' in Bagerhat

Police in Bagerhat have reported the death of a man in a 'shootout'.

They claim that he was an activist of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Chandra Roy said the' shootout' occurred  around 1:30am on Sunday at the Rakhalgachhi area near Bagerhat town.

The victim, estimated to be 40 to 45 years old, is yet to be identified, he said.

A joint raid by the police and detective branch was conducted in the area on a tip-off that JMB activists were gathering there , said SP Roy.

The shootout erupted when the law-enforcers were attacked with bombs and guns, claimed the Bagerhat police chief. 

"A man with gunshot wounds was found on the spot after the JMB activists retreated. He was taken to the Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead," he said.

Police said they found two firearms, some ammunitions and three crude bombs on the spot.
