On Oct 27, clashes erupted between Dhaka South City Corporation staff and hawkers at Gulistan during a drive to evict street vendors.

In the course of the violence, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders Sabbir Rahman and Ashiqur Rahman were seen firing in the air with guns.

Sabbir Hossain was general secretary of the BCL's Dhaka metro (South) unit, while Ashiqur was general secretary of the Wari unit in Dhaka.

The picture of the two brandishing guns appeared in the media the next day, after which the BCL expelled the duo from the organisation.

Police initiated a case over the incident, accusing the two of 'attempt to murder,' but could not arrest them.

On Nov 17, the two men surrendered to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Khurshid Alam and secured bail, court police Sub Inspector Mahmudur Rahman has confirmed.

"They had been absconding and surrendered to the court on Nov 17 and pleaded for bail," he told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.
