Chhatra League leader's body found hanging at CU campus home

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury was found hanging in his home at the Chittagong University campus.

He was found dead around 9:30pm on Sunday night, hanging from the ceiling of the building near Gate No-2 to campus, said police.

The 27-year-old was assistant secretary of BCL’s central committee and a former joint secretary of its committee at Chittagong University.

Diaz hailed from Paindong in Fatikchharhi Upazila and was known as a follower of AJM Nasir Uddin, Chittagong City mayor and general secretary of the port city’s Awami League committee.

“His body was found hanging from the ceiling after the door was forced open,” Campus Police Outpost Inspector Muhammad Mosaddek told bdnews24.com.

“We will be able to tell whether it was suicide or something else after an autopsy,” he said.

Chittagong University BCL vice president and Diaz’s neighbour, Md Mamun, told bdnews24.com that the body could be seen hanging in Diaz’s room in the two-storey building.

“He was not the type to commit suicide,” he said.

Recent disputes between BCL members had led to attacks and looting in several homes, including Diaz’s, said Mamun. The attacks had left their families shaken, he said.

“Links between his death and the attacks need to be investigated,” he added.
