Five to hang, 27 others to receive prison sentences for Habiganj murder

A Habiganj court has sentenced five persons to death for the 2002 murder of Moktadir Ali.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mahfuza Parvin rendered the verdict on Tuesday, 14 years after the murder.
 
The court has also convicted 27 others and ordered various prison terms.
 
The five death-row convicts are Anis Miah, Farash Miah, Jamshed, Bajlu Miah and Nurul Miah.
 
Fifteen of the convicts were present in court when the verdict was delivered on Tuesday, said Additional Public Prosecutor Saleh Uddin Ahmed.
 
According to case documents, Moktadir Ali was hacked to death by sharp weapons in a field next to his home in Goaljur village in Nabiganj Upazila on Feb 20, 2002. 
 
The victim's brother Mosahid Ali filed a case with the police the same day accusing 40 people.
 
Police pressed charges on 35 suspects in July the same year. 
 
Three of the suspects died during the course of the trial.
