The driver's body was inside the car, which was found 60 feet under water, but it is yet to be recovered, said Diver Humayun Kabir of Munshiganj's Sadarghat Fire Service.

Police said the car was spotted around 10am on Saturday, more than 10 hours after it plunged into the river when it hit and broke the railing of the bridge at the district's Muktarpur.

Munshiganj police OC Younus Ali said they were waiting for a tow-truck to pull the car out of the river.

The Munshiganj-bound sedan lost control on the bridge at midnight and plunged into the river.

Police have identified the car's owner and the man behind the wheels.

Muktarpur river police outpost's in-charge Md Mosharraf Hossain said the car is owned by one Abdur Rouf, a businessman from Narayanganj.

His son, 20-year-old Jalaluddin Bhuiyan Rumi was driving the car, said the police officer quoting the family.

"The family said Rumi had gone for a drive at the Muktarpur Bridge in the night with the chauffer, Md Rubel.

"Rubel says Rumi dropped him off on the southern end of the bridge and drove himself. The car hit the railing while Rumi was trying to take a u-turn on the bridge."

Fire Service divers rushed to the scene and around 2am found a bumper of the car.

The rescue operation, however, had to be suspended due to strong current in the river and was later resumed around 9am.
