It says these stretches are used by criminals to smuggle fake Indian currency notes, illegal migrants, gold, cattle, drugs and essential items and even members of insurgent groups.

The report says India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are now going to create a database of criminals, who use this border regularly for their illegal activities.

“Friendship and confidence in the two countries are better than ever before. We are taking measures to stop Bangladeshi smugglers travelling to India and vice versa," BGB regional commander Khalilur Rahman told a group of Indian journalists visiting border districts of Bangladesh.

BSF DIG at Kolkata,  RPS Jaswal added, “BSF and BGB now look after the India-Bangladesh border much better than what it used to be earlier.“

“Smugglers have no nationality. We also handle them the way BSF handles them. Our government, in principle, has agreed to have barbed wire fencing along the borders with India as well as Myanmar," BGB chief Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed said.

"In principle, it has also been decided to have link roads all along the border like India which facilitates BSF activities and those of the Myanmarese border guarding forces."

India has already finished fencing 76 percent of the border while the riverine section of 926.62 km is being covered with laser walls to stop smuggling of cattle, Phensedyl (cough syrup used as drugs in Bangladesh), mobile auto parts, gold silver, wildlife products and to stop smuggling of fake Indian currency notes, gold and fish into India.
