Blood-stained water on Dhaka streets after rains on Eid-ul-Azha morning

Heavy rain has turned the cattle sacrifice for the Eid-ul-Azha into a civic nightmare in Dhaka and the streets into blood streams in an unprecedented scene.

The floodwaters absorbed the bloody effluent from animal sacrifices and the poor drainage wreaked havoc on the citizens.  

Many dropped plans to go out of their homes as rain water clogging the streets mixed up with the blood of livestock.

Most of the over 1,000 places marked by the city corporations had no channel to drain the water out, bdnews24.com Staff Correspondent Obaidur Masum said.

Hasan Tarek, a publisher living in Fakirapool, slaughtered cattle at the garage.

“It’s a totally awkward situation! I saw knee-deep water on the street in front of my house when I woke up in the morning. I could not go out,” he said.

“The situation worsened as the blood and waste of slaughtered cattle were carried into the water-clogged streets,” he added.

Software engineer Rafiuddin Sifat said the situation was the same in Shantinagar.

“The rain has stopped but I am yet to go out,” he said in the afternoon.

In Shyamoli, residents were forced to slaughter cattle on the main street after the alleys were submerged by rain water.

One of them, Rezaul Karim, said, “There has not been enough supply of water or polythene bags. Big trouble here.”

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq, however, said slaughtering was conducted properly.

According to him, more animals were slaughtered at designated places this year than were last year.

Adequate numbers of Imams and butchers were present at the slaughter grounds and a sufficient amount of polythene bags and bleaching powder were also provided, he added.
